Information Cesenatico

Cesenatico boasts ancient origins; the precious finds which were unearthed in the surrounding area bear witness to the fact it dates back to 18.000 years ago, when it was just only a marshy and brackish district. Later on, it was conquered by the Romans, who called it Ad Novas. Up to the early Middle Ages, it was excluded from the most important trade circuits, and only started developing in 1300, when the nearby municipality of Cesena decided to built a harbour there to suit commercial purposes and gave Ad Novas the name of Cesenatico (through the addition of a fishing suffix to the name of Cesena)

The construction of the harbour took very long: in 1400, Leonardo da Vinci started working on the project, but he was soon stopped by the lack of funds from the financer, the Duke of Valentinois. In 1700, Cesenatico finally became an important commercial district and an independent municipality; from that moment, it experienced substantial growth up to the beginning of World War II, which hit it hard.

In the 50s, extensive public works turned Cesenatico into a modern resort which started attracting large numbers of tourists. One of the city’s most representative landmarks is its skyscraper, which gathers a lot of different flats. Today Cesenatico is divided into two distinct areas: The ancient, historical village and the modern town, the latter attracting large numbers of tourists both in summer and in winter. The proximity with the most appreciated resorts of the Riviera Romagnola and the lively pubs and clubs it hosts make Cesenatico one of the privileged holiday destinations for both young people and families looking for pleasant seaside holidays.
